Wired on Web 2.0
October 27, 2005 |
Wired features an interesting take on Web 2.0 today. Over the last few days, there have been more and more negative stories in larger publication. Definitely a meme that is catching on, I think. The question is, are the promises of Web 2.0 any different from those of the Web 1.0 hype machine. Indeed, I often question if the general public is interested in tagging, social bookmarking etc. A lot of what is being discussed as Web 2.0, is really just AJAXified Web 1.0 stuff such as email, photo sharing etc. So far, I fail to see anything really, really new. Sure, stuff looks better, but what are the new applications? Is there a killer Web 2.0 application out there that does something absolutely new? Otherwise, we are just blowing up a new bubble.
Anyway, here is a quote from the article to wet your appetite:
Spam, scams and scatterbrains — the same problems that plagued the old internet are cropping up again in a new wave of technologies known collectively as Web 2.0.But this time around, proponents say Web 2.0 has been better engineered to withstand the troubles that wrecked Usenet, BBSes and free e-mail.
