Wired on Web 2.0

October 27, 2005 |

Wired features an interesting take on Web 2.0 today. Over the last few days, there have been more and more negative stories in larger publication. Definitely a meme that is catching on, I think. The question is, are the promises of Web 2.0 any different from those of the Web 1.0 hype machine. Indeed, I often question if the general public is interested in tagging, social bookmarking etc. A lot of what is being discussed as Web 2.0, is really just AJAXified Web 1.0 stuff such as email, photo sharing etc. So far, I fail to see anything really, really new. Sure, stuff looks better, but what are the new applications? Is there a killer Web 2.0 application out there that does something absolutely new? Otherwise, we are just blowing up a new bubble.

Anyway, here is a quote from the article to wet your appetite:
Spam, scams and scatterbrains — the same problems that plagued the old internet are cropping up again in a new wave of technologies known collectively as Web 2.0.
But this time around, proponents say Web 2.0 has been better engineered to withstand the troubles that wrecked Usenet, BBSes and free e-mail.
